U.S. Embassy Supports the Centre for Indigenous Theatre's 2005 Summer School North in Yellowknife
July 2005

In July 2005, the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa supported the Centre for Indigenous Theatre Summer School NORTH program with a grant to help cover the costs of visiting American, Muriel Miguel to the Canadian north. Ms. Miguel is the Artistic Director and Co-founder of New York's "Spiderwoman Theatre", the longest running First Nations theatre company in North America. During her tenure in Yellowknife, Ms. Miguel worked with the students in a two-week intensive program developed by Stuck in a Snowbank Theatre aimed at:

  • Introducing aboriginal students to the fundamentals of professional actor training following the curriculum of the Centre for Indigenous Theatre with professional instructors
  • Introducing techniques to develop stories for performance. Students develop a skill set on how to create original work to feed a growing Native theatre movement
  • Exposing students to cultural storytellers, elders, and traditional song and dance and inviting exploration as to how this relates to the development of Native Theatre
  • Providing students with the fundamental skills necessary to make decisions regarding future/continued training in the performing arts
