International Polar Year 2007-2008

The International Polar Year : Canada and the United States in an international science initiative.

Since the first International Polar Year in 1882-83, there have been a number of international science initiatives involving intense periods of interdisciplinary research. The last such initiative, in 1957-58, involved 80,000 scientists from 67 countries.

International scientific and educational activities are planned or underway for the current International Polar Year. New scientific developments offer enormous opportunities for our understanding of polar systems. To ensure that researchers get the opportunity to work in both polar regions in the summer and winter, the "year" will actually run from March 2007-March 2009.

A Vision for the International Polar Year 2007-2008 was formulated by the U.S. National Committee and contains its seven recommendations for the U.S. science community and agencies to address. The U.S. National Committee was established by the Polar Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences.
