U.S. Commercial Service Visit to Whitehorse, Yukon, July 11-13, 2006
U.S. Commercial Service (USCS) officials from the U.S. Embassy made an outreach trip to Whitehorse, Yukon on July 11 through July 13, 2006. During the visit, Deputy Senior Commercial Officer Janice Corbett and Commercial Specialist Cheryl Schell met with the Yukon Department of Economic Development, Yukon Chamber of Mines, Yukon Chamber of Commerce, and local business leaders. These meetings included discussion of possible business partnerships and economic opportunities for Yukon residents and businesses. Given proximity and long-standing ties, there is potential for expansion of business ties both with Alaska and with Washington. USCS is in discussions with Yukon authorities to determine whether a trade mission focusing on mining equipment, transportation & logistics, environmental services, and building products. In addition, the Embassy officials discussed the upcoming 2007 Canada Winter Games and how this premier event could provide business opportunities for Canadian and U.S. companies. When asked to summarize her trip, Ms. Corbett raved about Yukon's spectacular beauty, the clean air, rivers, and lakes as well as the warm welcome she and Ms. Schell received. She said, "We look forward to working with the dynamic Yukon Department of Economic Development team." |
